Critical security vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used open-source programming language that powers websites and web applications, have triggered global cybersecurity alerts, prompting technology companies and government agencies to coordinate efforts to protect affected systems.
The two vulnerabilities, collectively known as “PHP2Shell,” could enable attackers to execute malicious code remotely on vulnerable servers, potentially exposing sensitive information, files, databases and networks. Although not every PHP-based website is affected, the language’s widespread adoption has heightened concerns about the potential scale of exploitation.
The U.S. National Security Agency urged organizations using vulnerabilities in PHP to prepare and install security updates, recommending that affected systems be taken offline if immediate patching is not possible. The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a similar warning, while cybersecurity authorities in Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the European Union also raised concerns.
Amazon Detects Potential Exploitation Attempts
Amazon reported that its threat intelligence team identified attempts to exploit the vulnerabilities before their public disclosure. Using its MadPot threat detection system, which monitors suspicious activity across internet-facing infrastructure, the company detected activity suggesting that malicious actors were already targeting the flaws.
However, Amazon said it remained unclear how attackers had obtained information about the vulnerabilities before their disclosure.
Artificial Intelligence Supports vulnerabilities in PHP Detection
Google and OpenAI highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in identifying software weaknesses and strengthening cyber defenses.
Google said its cybersecurity division, Wiz, used AI models to help discover and investigate the flaws. Its Gemini AI also supported efforts to assess potential attacks, test vulnerabilities and validate security patches.
OpenAI said researchers working with its AI models helped uncover the vulnerabilities. The company also described a two-month effort to coordinate with software maintainers, security researchers and industry partners to prepare fixes and protective measures before public disclosure.
The incident illustrates AI’s potential to accelerate vulnerability discovery while raising concerns that similar capabilities could be misused by cybercriminals.
Security Updates and Protective Measures Rolled Out
Cloudflare announced that it had deployed protections against PHP2Shell through its web application firewall, helping block malicious requests targeting vulnerable systems.
Meanwhile, the vulnerabilities in PHP development team released security updates, with authorities urging website operators to identify affected versions and apply the necessary patches promptly.
The incident underscores the risks posed by vulnerabilities in widely deployed software and highlights the importance of coordinated disclosure, rapid patching and continued investment in cybersecurity as AI reshapes both digital defense and cyber threats.
