OpenAI has announced that researchers using an unreleased internal model have made a breakthrough on the Navier-Stokes equations, one of the most challenging unsolved problems in mathematics. The announcement, made on September 8, has nevertheless triggered a dispute over who deserves credit for the work.
The Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the motion of fluids such as air and water, are among seven problems the Clay Mathematics Institute designated as Millennium Prize Problems in 2000. Each problem carries a US$1 million prize for a verified solution. Until now, only one of the seven problems had been officially solved.
Mathematicians Raise Attribution Concerns
Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematics professor at New York University, said in a statement published September 8 that he and Levent Alpöge, a researcher at Anthropic, had been independently working on the Navier-Stokes problem for much of the past year.
According to Buckmaster, OpenAI learned of their progress and then moved to complete the problem using what he described as a similar approach. He alleged that the company sought to reach the result before the independent researchers, raising questions about attribution and the extent to which their work may have influenced OpenAI’s efforts.
The dispute adds a notable dimension to OpenAI’s announcement, particularly as the mathematical community assesses whether the reported result constitutes a genuine solution to the Millennium Prize Problem and how credit should be assigned.
OpenAI Rejects the Allegations
OpenAI has strongly denied the claims. In comments to USA TODAY, the company described the researchers’ allegations as “categorically false.”
OpenAI also stated that its researchers had not seen Buckmaster and Alpöge’s work through any means before it was publicly released. The company specifically said that no specific user data was accessed in the process of attempting to solve the problem.
The competing accounts have placed the focus not only on the potential mathematical significance of OpenAI’s achievement, but also on transparency, attribution and the role of artificial intelligence in advanced mathematical research.
As mathematicians examine the details of the claimed result, independent verification will ultimately determine whether the breakthrough meets the rigorous standards required for a solution to one of mathematics’ most prestigious problems.
